the wilderness downtown

i’m not a big fan of arcade fire, but i absolutely LOVE this brilliant concept in their interactive video “the wilderness downtown.” it uses multiple cascading windows, animated birds, and, the best part, google street views of the street where you grew up. it’s all beautifully woven together to make you want to cry and, in the end, send a postcard of advice to your childhood self (an option at the end). the song is meh, but the experience is WOAH.

the video was designed for use with a chrome browser, but i used firefox and it seemed to work just fine.

before Sweden’s Jose Gonzalez became famous with Veneer in 2003, and further famous with In Our Nature in 2007, he played with two fellow musicians who have rebanded to form Junip. They just released their first album, Fields, which is streaming on NPR until it’s official release date September 14th. the album is really luscious and still has the cottony lull of Gonzalez’s voice, but now coupled with a more assertive and complex instrumentation. i love gonzalez on his own, but there is definitely a sense of actualization in this collaboration.

Junip on NPR first listen.

facebook theme song

LOVE IT! that zuckerberg is a real genius, commissioning this song from Turkish popstar Ismail YK.

this is fun: sing along with the chorus. you’ll feel like an idiot!

despite my love for this, Simarik by Tarkan is still my ALL TIME FAVORITE TURKISH SONG. no amount of times is too many times to listen to this song over and over again.

let’s forget for a second all the absurdities and impossibilities of New Money’s single “Bed Rock” (seriously, call you mr. flinstone in bed? pussy on your sideburns, for real? fly away as red bulls how??) but despite myself i love this song and have been known to make my car rock with it.

go on, turn it up. you’re wearing headphones anyway.

new music from MGMT!

somebody done leaked MGMT’s sophomore album, Congratulations, all over the internet weeks before its April 13 release, and to show they’re good sports, MGMT has now made the album available for streaming on their website. But great sports with brains would have just made it available for download.

new lady gaga video!

“Telephone” featuring Beyoncé off the album The Fame Monster.

the costuming is phenomenal but on the whole i think the video comes off as a hokey cross between Thelma and Louise, any Tarantino film and a commercial break. the video is driven almost entirely by product placements, featuring everything from chanel to coke to plentyoffish.com (??!) to polaroid to mayonnaise (???!!!), and that’s only a fraction of them. and when i don’t feel like it’s trying to sell me something, i feel like it’s just trying so hard to shock me. obviously lady gaga built her career on shocking, but she’s more compelling as a vague concept than as a specific character.

do not delay in checking out the hot new episode on Murder, She Podcasted. like murder? like angela lansbury? like music? then you will love Episode 91, “The Sins of Cabot Cove.”

be sure to check out all the other episodes too. each podcast corresponds to a different episode of the 80s show Murder, She Wrote and the playlists are so beautifully curated. it’s what we at action potential are writing the Great American Blog to!

little lady gaga

in brazil, this 8-year-old kid actually exists. what’s scarier is the existence of her parents who encourage her to wear black lipstick and dance and sing poorly to lady gaga’s songs about debilitating obsessions. at one point, the parents must have even suggested that the kid crawl sexily around on the floor. very classy.

at the same time, i love a world where this kid exists, so long as she remains in another hemisphere.

ahh, the immortal words of a snot-nosed hipster on the wrong side of the law. there is very little funnier than watching vapid hipsters try to sound not-stupid in a courtroom. it’s like watching a walrus try to drive a car, only funnier. here, kate levitt of teeth mountain and jonathan coward of shams battle it out over three smashed broken tvs and a dead cat, a casualty supposedly quickly buried in a shoe box by a drunk levitt. witness the judicial system at work while shedding a tear for our future.

in all of this, i have to wonder, is this is a prank, some brilliant publicity stunt, a rip on the modern justice system, a rip on daytime television masquerading as the modern justice system?? because if it is i wholeheartedly love these people now. the world just got a lot brighter since entertaining the idea that maybe these dumb kids aren’t so dumb after all.
