super-absorbent chandelier

Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos linked 25,000 tampons together to create the world’s most absorbent chandelier for the “Netless” exhibition at Belem Cultural Centre in Lisbon. At 16.5 feet high, “A Noiva” (The Bride) is a stunning visual representation of the number of tampons the average woman uses in a lifetime. unless you’re like me and you just use band-aids.

marvel at the grandeur and how magnificently the light bounces off the ridges of the unrealized tampon! so sumptuous!

Ten rules for writing

i LOVE this list of tips from accomplished writers. some of it’s bogus, but there are some really inspiring bits:

neil gaiman:

The main rule of writing is that if you do it with enough assurance and confidence, you’re allowed to do whatever you like. (That may be a rule for life as well as for writing. But it’s definitely true for writing.) So write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly, and tell it as best you can. I’m not sure that there are any other rules. Not ones that matter.

roddy doyle:

Do, occasionally, give in to temptation. Wash the kitchen floor, hang out the washing. It’s research.

anne enright:

Remember, if you sit at your desk for 15 or 20 years, every day, not counting weekends, it changes you. It just does. It may not improve your temper, but it fixes something else. It makes you more free.

geoff dyer:

Never ride a bike with the brakes on. If something is proving too difficult, give up and do something else. Try to live without resort to perseverance. But writing is all about perseverance. You’ve got to stick at it. In my 30s I used to go to the gym even though I hated it. The purpose of going to the gym was to postpone the day when I would stop going. That’s what writing is to me: a way of postponing the day when I won’t do it any more, the day when I will sink into a depression so profound it will be indistinguishable from perfect bliss.

bad obama paintings

it seems that no other president has inspired so many terrible presidential paintings as barack obama, which has got to be doing a number on his self-esteem. if i had to look at as many horribly mangled and deformed depictions of myself in watercolor and puffy paint, i think i would consider it the taxpayer’s duty to pay for my plastic surgery. or i would at least try to reform healthcare so that i could get treatment for my deformities.

now chris collins has compiled all those paintings into one website to show what we obviously really think the president looks like: alfred e. cosby on a good day, the black rocky dennis on a bad day.

spanish artist juan francisco casas is seriously blowing my mind with these exquisite ballpoint pen drawings. using up to 14 pens per drawing, casas creates pieces up to 10 feet high and going for up to $6000. not bad when your materials come in packs of 10 for $2.

“I guess it started off as a joke, to try and make something so realistic that people would think is a photo,” Casas said. “For me it’s not that different from painting. I was trying to show that it doesn’t matter what material you use, it’s what you do with it.”

high school me is very jealous, as all i ever figured out what to do with ballpoint pens was to cut them in half and use them to do blow. live and learn, i guess.
